OUR SPONSOR Visit Mikes site for the latest hours of operation. NEWS September Program This month’s program will be presented by Dr. John Gregory, W3ATE. We will have more information concerning the program shortly. We look forward to an interesting and very informative evening. Come join us. Dues We are slowly approaching that time of the year when our dues are due. We recently dropped the names of 17 members, from our membership list, that had not paid their 2008 dues. We hate having to do this but we need active members; not those in name only. The club is doing much that needs to be paid for in upgrading our repeaters, installing D-Star repeaters, and paying our monthly bills. We have been fortunate to receive a few donations but, they will not last forever D-Star Information Ralph Tullo updated the members on the D-Star program at our June meeting. We are connected to the internet. Nets had check-ins from Texas, Canada, and England. A D-Star status report will be presented at every meeting and Ralph will try to give us updates as we go thru our learning curve. For D-Star status and in depth information, visit our second site W4BUG.net. |
Welcome to the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Association The GCARA is one of the oldest ham radio clubs in South Florida with a growing membership of about 100 licensed operators. The club was founded in 1969 by its first trustee, Charles D. Ritchie, (Chuck) (W4BUG) SK, back when amateur radio, VHF, UHF, and HF repeaters were a technical challenge. Cell phones and e-mail have changed the nature of communications radically in the past decade or so. Much of this technology, however, requires a complex infrastructure including phone towers, telephone lines, satellite links and electrical power to function. Keep in mind that the amateur radio operator is often the unseen hero during emergencies when other means fail to operate. In this high technology information age, there is still a need for the dedicated amateur, and our club stands ready to provide any public service communications should it be called upon to do so. |

The 2008 Hurricane Season will be upon us before we know it and we must be prepared. As many of you know, members of Broward County ARES/RACES man the American Red Cross hurricane evacuation shelters, the North Broward Hospital District facilities, and special care facilities. The locations of these facilities are listed here. We are looking for more Amateur Radio Operators. If you can work in one of these facilities please contact the Assistant Emergency Coordinator Jeff Depew at j4244@aol.com. |
